SCREENDANCE INTENSIVE 2016 : Winnipeg, MB, Canada, ­ August 8­ – 20,2016

This intensive will explore the choreographic and filmic potential of creating dance specifically for the camera. It’s an exciting opportunity for emerging to established videographers, choreographers, filmmakers, dancers, and artists from all genres to participate in an intensive two­ week programme in screendance creation.

WEEK ONE focuses on tools, skills and aesthetics with an emphasis on creating dynamic imagery for the screen. It includes a morning movement class especially designed for this programme, specific tasks/ exercises to train the eye to create and look for energy in the frame, site­-specific exercises outside the studio, viewing footage of exercises from class and dance films from across the globe followed by critical dialogue. Participants will be encouraged to reflect on the meaning, metaphor and the politics constructed by their choices of representation.

Participants will also learn to use a camera, lighting for film, scoring a soundtrack, how to edit and storyboard.

With the support from the mentors and other participants in the intensive, during WEEK TWO all participants will take what they have learned from week one and apply that as they direct and edit their very own screendance. The intensive culminates in a SCREENING of all the participants’ films on the last Saturday of the intensive.

For this two week intensive you will want to bring devices to capture footage, such as smart phones, tablets and digital cameras to use in the exercises. Creators will be provided with technical assistance for their films as well as access to professional equipment and editing suites.

It is recommended that participants bring their own laptops to edit on.

Please also wear layered clothing that is easy to move in.

Contact Improvisation is a partner dance form based on the physical principles of touch, momentum, shared weight, and most quintessentially – following a shared point of contact.    Through an honoring of every moment one learns to recognize and differentiate subtle impulses in our movement choices and our partner’s choices. We begin to decipher the cues that we give and receive which tell us when to lead or follow, when to go up, when to go down, where to touch, how to lift, when to slow down, and when to be still. In this form one learns to stay in integrity with each choice, never forcing, never rushing.  

Who Should Take The Class? Actors, dancers, and/or anyone interested in expanding physical range and skill who have had some contact improvisation experience.

This class needs 10 participants to go forward.

Ali Robson is a dancer, choreographer and teacher based in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Since graduating from the School of Contemporary Dancers in 2004 she has worked in both Vancouver and Winnipeg. In Vancouver she studied and performed contact improvisation with EDAM under the direction of Peter Bingham and in 2012 performed in Serge Bennathanʼs Elles. Ali worked for three seasons with Winnipegʼs TRIP Dance Company under the artistic direction of Karen Kuzak performing in Herding Instinct and The Art of Displacement. In early 2013, she performed with Winnipeg’s Contemporary Dancers in Toward Light: A Tribute to Rachel Browne and continues to work with the company.

Ali has worked as a dancer, rehearsal director, and movement coach with many artists including Tom Stroud (Company Link), Natasha Torres-Garner, Treasure Waddell, Alexandra Elliott, Claire Marshall, Coral Aiken, Delia Brett (MACHiNENOiSY), Melanie Kuxdorf, Susie Burpee, and Debbie Patterson. Her own choreographic work has been presented by Young Lungs Dance Exchange and at the Winnipeg Fringe Festival.

Ali holds a BA Honours in Theatre majoring in dance from the University of Winnipeg. She teaches creative movement and modern dance to children and adults and has taught contact improvisation and modern technique to students at the University of Winnipeg, to the public through community classes and to the professional dance communities in Winnipeg, Vancouver, and Regina.

The Tallest Poppy Residency Program is a two-day artist residency curated by Synonym Art Consultation.

For one weekend every month, a portion of The Tallest Poppy will become a makeshift studio for a new artist-in-residence, who will execute a sitespecific art project.

By inviting a professional artist to work creatively in a public space and to interact with patrons, this program aims to bridge the gap between maker and audience and to open a dialogue regarding the role of art and artists in the public sphere.

Call for submissions

Synonym Art Consultation is currently accepting applications for The Tallest Poppy Residency Program for 2015. There are twelve slots to be filled for 2015, so the sooner the application is received in the calendar year, the more opportunities there will be. Artists from all mediums are welcome to apply, however, a physical product of the residency must be able to remain on display at the restaurant for a minimum of one month after the residency (can be an art object, or physical documentation of the project).

All applications must be submitted electronically as a Microsoft Word, or PDF attachment.

Please include with any application:

• Artist’s name and contact information
• An artist statement/bio
• A brief description of the project including:
• what medium will you be working in
• what type of space you would ideally require
• what would remain on display in the restaurant after the residency is completed
• how working in a public studio space may influence your project
• What months of the year you would prefer this residency to take place

Please also include one black-and-white photo of yourself, attached separately, as a JPEG file.

You will receive a confirmation that the submission has been received within a couple of days, but there is no guarantee of a reply beyond that.

Successful submission of an application does not guarantee your acceptance into the residency. Successful applicants will be selected based on several criteria by Chloe Chafe and Andrew Eastman of Synonym Art Consultation. Individuals are welcome to submit as many different project proposals as they would like.

Details of residency

The Tallest Poppy (103 Sherbrook St.) is a restaurant located in The Sherbrook Inn in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. Each artist-in-residence will be fed by the staff at the restaurant for the duration of the two-day residency. The artist will also be allocated a twenty dollar bar tab at the restaurant. In return for this, the artist is expected to be present at The Tallest
Poppy as much as possible, working on the project outlined in their application, between the hours of 8am and 11pm on Saturday and between 9am and 11pm on Sunday.

A space within The Tallest Poppy will be designated as a studio space for the artist for the duration of the residency. While the art project does not have to revolve around the idea of interaction with the public, the artist should be prepared to experience the many variables that come with the daily operations of a restaurant, including discussions with patrons, and
photographs being taken of them or their work, all taking place in a noisy and active creative environment.

The final physical product of the residency will remain for a minimum of one month in the restaurant. At no time will any work of art created by the artist-in- residence be the property of The Tallest Poppy or of Synonym Art Consultation. The artist-in-residence assumes all risk and liability for any damage or theft of any works of art that they have created for the residency.

If the artist-in-residence expresses that they do not wish to retain the product of the residency after the month is completed, it will become the property of Synonym Art Consultation.

Are you a performing artist or group interested in touring Manitoba? Apply to preview & pitch your show to rural Manitoba arts presenters at Manitoba Showcase 2016 taking place in Morden, MB October 20-23, 2016. Manitoba Showcase is a unique opportunity for tour-ready performers to book shows in Manitoba.

Performing artists can apply through iwanttoshowcase.ca–a one-stop platform that allows applicants to register for several different Showcase events across both Canada and the US. Artists from different disciplines—be it dance, theatre, music, or any other kind of performing art—who are interested in touring their show in Manitoba are encouraged to apply. Tour bookings resulting from Showcase 2016 will be coordinated for the 2017/18 fall/winter touring season.

What is Manitoba Showcase?
Hosted every fall by the Manitoba Arts Network and the preeminent event of its kind in the province, Manitoba Showcase aims to connect local and national performing artists with arts presenters from throughout the region, offering up to 15 artists a unique opportunity to showcase their talents, secure bookings and tour their show throughout Manitoba. To date we have helped secure bookings for 50 shows and counting for artists who performed at Manitoba Showcase 2015 held in Flin Flon, MB.

Now in its ninth year, Compass Points is a 6-day intensive program designed to inspire and nurture the careers of emerging artists from across the country. It provides a firsthand introduction to the professional theatre industry and fosters lifelong collaborative relationships among a peer community of Canada’s next generation of theatre creators. The program will focus on providing participants with new tools, inspiration, and ideas to fuel their creative practices while engaging in a critical discourse on artistic creation and criticism. The Magnetic North Theatre Festival will be held in Whitehorse, Yukon, this year from June 9-18. The Compass Points Program will run from June 11-16, 2016.

The Compass Points program provides participants with a three-fold approach:

Workshops & Panels – Engage with Canada’s top professional artists and theatre practitioners from across the country. Topics and events vary from year to year to complement festival programming and address current concerns and questions. Past workshops include: Kaleidography, and Chorus, Le Jeu, and auditioning technique and previous panels have addressed touring, theatre creation and criticism, grant writing, new play development, and self-producing.  Past panelists and workshop leaders include: Peter Hinton, Richard Rose, Sarah Garton Stanley, Jillian Keiley, Daniel Brooks, Denise Clark, Marcus Youssef, Daniel MacIvor, Ravi Jain, Ann-Marie Kerr, Mary Vingoe and more.

Mentorship – Each participant will be paired with one other member of the Compass Points Program. Together they will be partnered with an established artist and their company involved in the 2016 Magnetic North Theatre Festival. The participants will have unique access to the show, and the artists and practitioners involved in creating the work.

Performances – The group will attend all the performances that comprise the Magnetic North Theatre Festival. Participants will be exposed to some of the best and most daring work currently being produced across the country.

Ideal Candidates Are:

• Emerging artists who have a strong interest in engaging in the national and local arts community, developing their craft as an artist, and artistic leadership.
• In their final years or recently graduated from post-secondary theatre, dance, and music programs, or emerging artists who have been in the arts industry for up to four years since graduating.
• Available for the entire duration of Compass Points (June 11-16, 2016).

Your submission must include:

1. One to two (1-2) page letter of interest. This should answer three questions: Why you? Why this program? Why now?
2. One (1) page description of your artistic practice. What kind of theatre / dance / performance are you interested in? What have you worked on and what work do you see yourself doing next? 
3. Resume/CV (Optional)

This activity will allow 8 companies and/or artists selected by a jury to share information about a new work or a work in progress with the artists, agents and presenters taking part in the Biennale.

Projects we’re looking for:
• A work in progress
• A new work that has never been performed for an audience
• A production that cannot be adapted to a showcase format, either because of its length or its set design

Each artist/company will have 7 minutes to share information about the work or project (5 minutes of presentation and 2 minutes of questions).

– Selected artists/companies must register as an exhibitor with a booth, half-booth or table in the exhibition hall, or be registered as an additional exhibitor.
