Movement Practice
Mon Jan 21 2019 @ 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm
Monday, January 21
3-5 PM
Video Pool, 300 Arthur Street
Winnipeg, MB.
This month’s free Movement Practice, titled Movement, Mediation and Improvisation, is led by Winnipeg-based contemporary dancer Carol-Ann Bohrn and is suitable for all persons interested in moving. All levels of experience are welcome.
In this movement exploration, we begin with a body scan, tuning in to our varied sensations; temperature, size, contraction, expansion, vibration, tingling, itching, tension, and more. The work evolves to incorporate subtle actions generated by the mover’s impulses and curiosities. We explore the dialogue between active participation and active receptivity to our body’s own yearnings for movement.
Our task is to be non-judgmental and remain aware and observant of what we feel. As humans, we tend to become attached to particular sensations and adverse to others, and in so doing we narrow our experience of our physicality, becoming stuck in habits and unable to venture into territory that is painful or unknown. By slowing our action, we can heighten our perception of these tendencies and patterns and discover new possibilities. From laying on the ground to the potential of ecstatic dancing, we are liberated to greet the sensations of our movements, practice non-judgement of ourselves, and expand our repertoire of self-knowledge and experience.
