For our last Outreach event we are delighted to invite special guest Maura García (non-enrolled Cherokee/Mattamuskeet) from North Carolina. Maura is an artist-in-residence in the Young Lungs Dance Exchange Research Residency. Part of their research process will be to invite participants to reimagine life underneath ᎭᏫᎾᏗᏢ Hawinaditlv. Thinking about the multitude of homes in the soil and the flowing of liquid, rock and fire. How, when, and where, we as humans are interacting with the forces and processes beneath, and contemplating how dancers might move if we were able to move underground. Your engagement on April 15 will directly feed Maura’s research!

Zorya will facilitate the first half of this session where we will dance together through group improvisations. How wonderful it is to do what we do in community with others! These Outreach sessions have been an opportunity to cultivate curiosity in our individual practices by exchanging with other movement based artists.

10:00am – 11:15am – Group Improvisations with Zorya Arrow
11:15am – 11:30am – Break
11:30am – 1:00pm – Participation in Maura García’s research process

About Maura García:

Maura García (non-enrolled Cherokee/Mattamuskeet) is a dancer, dancemaker, entertainer, facilitator, thought leader and artistic director. She inspires people to liberate themselves through vibrant performances that channel the sensual rhythms of the natural world. From theater stages, to nightclubs, to museums, to conferences, to universities, to private events, to site-specific outdoor performances, Maura’s powerful work transforms time and space. At the root of all of her endeavors is the desire to heal and create more space for joy in the world.

As an artistic director, Maura collaborates with Indigenous and POC artists to realize multi-media performances, interactive dance experiences and community arts projects. Her narrative driven work uncovers stories hidden by colonialism and reflects the power they have to change our realities. As a human and as a creator, Maura works to uplift Indigenous cultural values, perpetuate ancestral knowledge and actively respect the living earth.

About Zorya Arrow:

Zorya Arrow is an artist of European ancestry, working and living as a dancer, choreographer, teacher, actor, director, filmmaker, advocate, social dancer, clown, and storyteller. She is passionate about working in experimental and trans-disciplinary contexts which include elements of collaboration and equitable access. An example of this is her choreographic work with a mixed ability cast in Antigone with Sick + Twisted Theatre, AA Battery, and The Mariachi Ghost. This summer, she received “Best Performance” at the Gimli International Film Festival for her acting role in the feature film, Arutinae, by local filmmaker Erin Buelow. Zorya is a movement instructor for the University of Winnipeg’s Department of Theatre and Film, and holds an honours degree in Dance from the University of Winnipeg, in affiliation with The School of Contemporary Dancers Senior Professional Program.
